We had a nice trip, but getting settled in Dusseldorf would not be easy. The hotel had neither internet access, laundry services or parking. We decided to just don't care and start drinking instead! The old city was a blast, the many bars in the old town kept us busy late into the night.
The world’s most beautiful mountain roads
We’re in our car, cruising up a deep valley in central Austria. We’re heaading into Euarope’s largest national park, called Hohe Tauern. The route we’re driving is supposed to be the most beautiful road in Europe, and we can easily understand why.
We’ve just had a small break in the scenic little town of Lienz, we sat in it’s little square and had coffee and banana split, admiring the impressive mountains crashing up towards the sky. We’re now cruising in about 100 on wonderful roads, with a foaming river by the road, forest-clad hills on the left and right, and two majestic mountain peaks ahead. We’re driving through small tunnels, where waterfalls are crashing above the tunnel roof and into the valley below.
We parked our car, and took a few pictures of the amazing mountains behind us. German parking hell
After a whole day of driving, we arrived in Dusseldorf 8 PM. We found the hotel, and went to park our car somewhere. Driving in Dusseldorf is a mess, and we had a really stressful experience driving around at random trying to find free or paid 24 hour parking. After about an hour we decided to just park it in the street somewhere, and deal with it tomorrow.
Fire, Ellen, Ruth and Dice are having a blast in one of the old taverns in Dusseldorf.Drinking with the Irish girls
After the tiresome driving experience we went to the bar area of Dusseldorf. We had read in a guide that Dusseldorf was supposed to have alot of bars. And that the bars put together was like the longest bar in the world. This made it quite easy to find a place to take a beer or a drink. The street we were in was in Altstadt in the center of Dusseldorf. At the first bar we met up with Ruth and Ellen, the two Irish girls that Fire met in Prague. We spent most of the time in Dusseldorf with them. Partying, and then trying to recover from the hangovers. German beer is excellent, and the local dark Alt beer (old beer) was especially good!
The best medicine for recovering from a hangover was resting in a park in the city. Dusseldorf has got very nice parks! We spent many hours just listening to music and chatting, laying on our backs feeling the fresh Ruhr-air. Of course sometimes some of us grew restless from just laying there. From those times the bottlebalance game was discovered. Resting on your back with a bottle on your forehead is strangely relaxing. Trying to stand up and then lie down again, with the bottle still on your forehead, is pretty funny.
Facts about Dusseldorf:
The people:
Taxi drivers in Dusseldorf is really nice. We had a couple of nice conversations with them. Almost like a guided tour through the city from one of them. They didn’t overprice anything either. The locals that were having a party was also very friendly, open and talkative.
The Place:
600’000 is not that much compared to many other cities in Europe. But this town is really close to alot of other cities. It lays in the Ruhr-area in Germany and is considered to be one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The parking of the town was incredibly awkward. Many places cars stood on the sidewalks. Somewhere else someone had parked in the middle of the road. Too few parkingplaces for too many cars. Don’t bring your car to this place! The partypart of this town was great.
The food:
There are alot of nice restaurants along the main street in Altstadt. The people there are quite friendly as well. Not to expensive, and great food. We had dinner at a place called Santiago wich was great. Beer is a strange thing i Dusseldorf. They got the smallest, strangest little beers in the world. Two sips and you’re done. The drinks were actually larger than the beers. Remember to order large beers in the bar!
The girls:
Pretty much a low leveled Berlin. Luckily we met the gorgeous Irish girls.
This square in Altstadt looked very German. We call this picture "Dice in front of Germany"
Dice’s travelling tip:
When a beautiful girl is walking in front of you, don’t stare at her ass all the time. Constantly hitting your head into stuff that is to low for you will make you dizzy in the end.
Fire's doing a running pose in Altstadt, next to a poster with the symbol. Jc, here's your phoon :-)
